 Chapter Workshop Completed

Last Saturday EAA Chapter 1279 hosted a Home-Builders Workshop training session aimed particularly at the members of Aviation Explorer Post 7500 based at the French Valley Airport.

The focus of this session was riveting.  Our chapter vice-president, Marshal Whatley, conducted the session with help and support provided by Alex Erdyli, Jerry Trapp, and Doug Kanczuzewski.

Thirteen youngsters signed up and attended the session which began at 10 AM with a one-hour discussion on the function that rivets play in the construction of aluminum airplanes, the various sizes of rivets, the different kinds of rivets and riveting techniques. etc.  Each student was then given the opportunity to get some hands-on experience setting rivets in some pre-formed aluminum to produce a handy little aluminum tool box which the youngsters got to take home.

The materials for these tool boxes was provided by Vans Aircraft, manufacturers of the popular RV series of aircraft.  Vans offers these tool box kits as a training aid to help prospective builders develop the skills needed to build an aluminum airplane.  Marshal ordered fifteen of these material kits and spent quite a bit of time doing some trimming and other prep work in an effort to optimize the time available during the riveting session.

The youngsters were asked to pay $30 to cover the cost of the material kits and they came away with some knowledge, some experience, and a handy little tool box.  It was a great success.  See photos below.
